Looking to explore Ghana's hidden natural treasures on foot? As someone who's spent years traversing these trails, I'm excited to share my insider's guide to the best hiking locations in Ghana. Here's everything you need to know about hiking in some of the popular hiking destinations in Ghana.
1. Mount Afadjato - The Highest Peak
As someone who's spent the last decade exploring Ghana's hidden trails and majestic landscapes, I'm excited to share my insider knowledge of the country's most breathtaking hiking destinations. From the lush Volta Region to the stunning Ashanti highlands, these trails offer something for every skill level and showcase Ghana's incredible biodiversity.
Trail Overview
Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
Elevation: 885 meters
Duration: 2-3 hours round trip
Best Season: November to March
Having guided countless hikers up Mount Afadjato, I can tell you that timing is everything. The trail starts at the Visitor Center in Liati Wote, marked by clear green signage. The first kilometer is deceptively gentle, but don't let that fool you!
What to Expect
Well-maintained trail with clear markers (look for red and white stripes)
Steep sections with rope assists in the final third
Dense forest coverage for most of the trail
Local guides available at the visitor center
Seasonal Variations
Dry Season (November-March): Best visibility, but dusty conditions
Rainy Season (April-October): Slippery trails, but stunning vegetation
Peak Season: December-January
Pro Tips
During my last ascent in January, I discovered that starting before 7 AM helps beat both the heat and the crowds. Pack at least 2 liters of water – trust me, you'll need it!
2. Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary (Wli Falls Trail)
Trail Overview
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Distance: 4 km round trip
Location: Volta Region
Best Season: Year-round
What to Expect
Well-maintained trail with clear markers
Multiple stream crossings (11 total)
Wooden bridges and stone steps
Abundant bird life and butterflies
Upper and lower falls viewing points
Seasonal Highlights
Year-round waterfall flow
Dry Season: Easier trail conditions, smaller waterfall volume
Wet Season: Spectacular falls, but more challenging crossings
Pro Tips
I always recommend waterproof hiking sandals here – you'll want them for the stream crossings. I also recommend that you also get a walking stick at the base before starting the hike which will help you with the hike at steep areas.
3. Shai Hills Resource Reserve
Trail Overview
Difficulty: Easy to Challenging (multiple trails)
Location: Greater Accra Region
Duration: 1-5 hours
What to Expect
Savanna landscape
Rocky outcrops
Wildlife sightings (baboons, kob antelope)
Historical caves
Rock climbing opportunities
Pro Tips
I personally prefer to start this hike by 6 AM to avoid the midday heat. The weather is also cooler during the months of December-February because of the Harmattan season which makes the hike easier.
4. Kakum National Park Trail
Trail Overview
Difficulty: Easy (ground trails), Moderate (canopy walk)
Distance: 2 km nature trail
Best Season: Year-round
Location: Central Region
What to Expect
Well-maintained forest trails
Famous canopy walkway (350 meters long)
Seven bridge sections
Multiple trail options
Rich wildlife viewing opportunities (especially butterfly and bird watching)
Professional guides available on site
Seasonal Variations
Dry Season: Better visibility for wildlife spotting
Wet Season: Lusher vegetation, more bird activity, slippery trails
Dawn Hours: Best for wildlife viewing
Pro Tips
If you want the opportunity to see some of the wildlife, you can consider staging in one of the tree houses in the park. For bird watching, I recommend booking the first morning slot (6 AM) for the best viewing (don’t forget your binoculars). The canopy walk can be scary for those afraid of heights, but the guides are excellent at providing support. If you are visiting during the raining season, bring an umbrella along because the rain can be very unpredictable as the park is a rainforest.
5. Boti Falls Trail
Trail Overview
Difficulty: Challenging
Duration: 3 to 4 hours
Best Season: June to December
Location: Eastern Region
What to Expect
Twin waterfalls (250 steps to falls)
Umbrella rock formation
Three-headed palm tree
Multiple viewing platforms
Seasonal Notes
Peak Flow: July-September
Low Flow: December- January
Dry Period: February- April (Falls doesn’t flow around this time of the year)
Best Photography: Early morning
Pro Tips
The hike to the umbrella rock and the three headed palm tree is one of the most difficult hikes I have ever embarked on. The hikes are very steep at some points and the challenging part is that ascending is just as difficult as descending. The good thing is that there is the option to use a car or a motorbike if you want to see the umbrella rock and the three headed palm tree without doing the hike.
